The WESSA / WWF Eco-Schools programme aims to provide learners with the capacity and skills to make informed decisions about the lifestyles, livelihoods and relationships with their environment.
In North West Province the programme is funded by PetroSA and currently there are 11 schools registered. Internationally it involves over 50 countries and 30 000 schools. When schools register with the programme, teachers commit to an ongoing process of developing lesson plans and learner-centred activities. Each year a new theme is chosen by the learners and teachers. Lesson plans are developed and school improvement plans and records of their progress are collected in an Eco-Report. These are assessed at the end of a year, and schools can achieve a Bronze, Silver, Green, Gold or an International Flag award for their efforts.
